What are lipomas?

Lipomas are soft, subcutaneous, benign growths which are made up of an excess of fat cells within a fibrous capsule. They are visible as a pliable lump of around 1cm to 2cm size, just below the skin surface. Some lipomas are bigger too. They can develop anywhere on the body but more commonly, they occur on the upper thighs, arms, back, neck, buttocks and armpits.

Genetic factors and unhealthy food consumption is the cause or the reason for development of lipomas. They typically develop in middle-aged people of both sexes. Commonly, those who are obese, diabetic, have high cholesterol, have certain other medical conditions or suffer from liver disorders are more prone to lipomas. They are painless and usually require no treatment. If the lipoma is a cosmetic problem or causes pain, it can be surgically excised by a doctor. Other treatment options include steroid injections and liposuction.

If you develop lipomas, it is better to switch to a fat-free healthy diet, lose weight and start a strict exercise regimen.
There are several home remedies to treat lipomas, but they all work slowly, and it takes time and perseverance to show results. Turmeric, sage, Thuja and castor oil are some of the most infamous herbal remedies for lipomas.

Castor oil is a readily available, safe, inexpensive and effective home remedy for lipomas. It is extracted from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant and has been used since ancient times to treat myriad health conditions. It also finds mention in ancient Egyptian history, and its medicinal use is advocated in Ayurveda, the old traditional Indian system of medicine.

Castor oil contains essential fatty acids which promote skin health. It has wound healing, infection preventing, blood circulation-boosting and anti-bacterial properties which heal and maintain good skin health. Also, you can use it to remove skin growths like skin tags, warts, moles, scars and stretch marks. You can use it as a laxative and as an inducer of labour in pregnant women as well. However, if you’re pregnant, it’s always better to consult your doctor before trying anything on your own.

Castor oil has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and is also effective in shrinking benign growths on the skin. It contains ricinoleic acid, which helps to shrink subcutaneous fatty tissue.

Place a few drops of castor oil on the lipoma and massage it well. Do this at bedtime, and make sure to cover the lipoma with a cloth to avoid staining your clothes and the bedsheets. Leave the oil on overnight and wash off the next morning. Repeat the process daily till the lipoma shrinks and disappears.

Precautions

  • Use only organic, cold-pressed, pure castor oil.
  • It may cause allergic reactions in some people. Hence, it is better to do a small patch test before using it.
  • Castor oil is only effective in treating small-sized lipomas.
  • Since the oil is greasy, it is best to use suitable clothing or covering over the oiled lipoma to avoid staining the clothes and bedsheets.
  • Since the oil can induce labour, pregnant women should avoid using it.
