What is Colon Cleansing
Alternative medicine practitioners advocate colon cleansing to detoxify your body. The theory behind this is that accumulated toxins, bacteria, parasites, and impacted waste in your large intestine can cause a number of health problems such as arthritis and hypertension. It is a popular belief that colon cleansing helps in the following:
- Improve overall health
- Better nutrient absorption
- Boosts energy levels
- Improves liver function
- Aids weight loss
- Improves mood
- Promotes immune function in your body
- Relieves constipation
The conventional medicine system uses colon cleansing before medical procedures like colonoscopy. Colon cleansing treatment uses large amounts of water. A gallon of water is inserted into the rectum via a tube that goes to the colon, it can include substances like enzymes too. The pressure of the water along with an abdominal massage causes the water to expel from your colon along with waste matter.
Enemas help expel the wastes from the colon. You can do colon cleansing through the oral route as well. The different methods for natural colon cleansing at home include:
- High fiber fruit juice
- Vegetable Juice
- Eating high fiber nuts and seeds
- Drink lemon water and honey
- Consume fermented foods like yogurt
- Drink herbal teas like psyllium, aloe vera, ginger tea
- Fish oils, and fasting might as well help
Flaxseed for Colon Cleansing
Flaxseed is high in insoluble fiber. It absorbs water which softens the stool and adds bulk to it. This stimulates bowel movements and allows the stool to pass smoothly through your gastrointestinal tract. Hence, it helps regulate bowel movements, keeps the colon clean, prevents inflammation, relieves symptoms of IBS, and protects against colon cancer.
Colon Cleanse Recipe With Flaxseed
When you eat whole flaxseeds, it passes undigested through the intestinal tract. Hence, it is best to use freshly ground flaxseeds. After grinding flaxseeds in a coffee grinder, store the powder in an air-tight container in the refrigerator and use it within 24 hours as otherwise, it will lose its potency. Kefir is a fermented drink that you can make from milk and kefir grains which works well with flaxseed for effective cleansing.
How to Use
You should follow this flaxseed colon cleanse plan for three weeks to see good results.
Mix 1 tbsp of flaxseed powder in 100ml of kefir or yogurt. Consume it once in the morning instead of your regular breakfast and once more before you go to bed. Do this every day for one week and drink at least ten glasses of water daily.
The following week, mix 2 tbsp of flaxseed powder in 100ml of kefir or yogurt and consume twice in the morning and at bedtime for a week.
In the 3 rd week, mix 3 tbsp of flaxseed powder to 150ml of kefir or yogurt. Drink this twice every day throughout the week.
Choose organic products only and do not take large amounts of flaxseeds as it may cause bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, and sometimes even obstruction in the digestive tract. Drink plenty of water when consuming flaxseeds to avoid these side effects. Further, check for flaxseeds’ allergic reactions when using it for the first time. Flaxseeds may cause hormonal imbalance; hence, check with your doctor if you have other medical conditions before consuming them. If you haven’t tried the fermented drink – kefir before, take a day break between weeks to help your body adapt. Walking sand deep breathing aid the cleansing process.
Note: You should do a colon cleanse only once a year.
Modern medicine does not support colon cleansing as some of the ingredients in colon cleansing can be harmful to your body. Our human body naturally gets rid of waste matter without any need for intervention. Avoid commercially available colon cleansing products.
Colon cleansing may cause:
- Nausea, and vomiting
- Rectal perforation
- Headache and weakness
- Kidney damage
- It can even lead to a change in the natural bacteria of the colon, and a change in electrolyte balance in your body.
Consult your medical practitioner before opting for colon cleansing treatment, especially if you are on medication for IBS, colitis, heart, liver, or kidney issues.
