Detangling hair can be a huge task! Learn a few home remedies for detangling hair at home without using chemical-filled products.

Why Detangled Hair Matters?

If you groom your hair well, it is a style statement all by itself. It is satisfying to have a smooth, healthy, and easy comb through. However, you often experience the frustration of finding knots in your hair and getting them entangled. Detangling hair can be stressful, time-consuming, and can lead to hair breakage.

Reasons for Tangled Hair

Tangling of hair can occur due to a variety of reasons. If you have hair damage, it will have open cuticles that can tangle with each other and form knots. Besides, split ends can lead to tangled hair as well.

If you sleep with loose hair at night, it is subject to friction against the pillowcase and sheets, this can cause knots in the hair easily. Using hair styling products like bleach and heating tools like hair dryers and curlers can damage hair, making it frizzy and dry. In addition, humidity and wind cause tangles by making the hair sticky and causing excessive hair movement, respectively. Dry hair and naturally curly hair are subject to tangles more than any other hair type. Tangles can occur when your hair is below shoulder length or if you comb and towel the hair harshly.

How to Detangle Your Hair

You must detangle your hair gently and patiently. You can use a detangling spray, coconut oil, or baby oil on dry or damp hair to lubricate your hair and make it easier to separate individual strands.

Section your hair and hold up the sections with clips. Leave one section free and start detangling by running your fingers through your hair from the scalp to the tips. Run a wide-toothed comb through your hair once most of the tangles are out. Clip up the detangled hair and go on to the next section.

Home Remedies for Detangling Hair

1. Apply Hair Oil

Oil your hair regularly with coconut oil or almond oil as it helps moisturize and condition your hair. This prevents dryness and brittleness, which are potent causes for tangled hair.

2. Water and Apple Cider Vinegar

Rinse your hair with a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar in a 1:1 ratio after a shower. Leave on for 10 minutes and rinse off with water. This will condition your hair and make it less tangled as well.

3. Peanut Butter and Mayonnaise

Use common pantry ingredients like peanut butter and mayonnaise on the tangles to soften and condition the hair. Rinse off after a few minutes with tepid water and use a wide-toothed comb to detangle your hair easily.

4. Olive Oil

Apply olive oil on your scalp and hair and leave it on for 15 minutes. Wash your hair with a mild Shampoo and rinse off with warm water. This will help you remove tangles easily without hair breakage while providing nourishment to the hair.

4. Satin Pillow and Braids

Sleep on a satin pillowcase as it reduces friction, or wear your hair in a loose braid at bedtime. Braiding your hair when you are out on a windy day will prevent your hair from blowing about and tangling. Similarly, wear a hat or scarf while going out in the sun to prevent damage to your hair.

5. After Wash Care

After a shower, use a microfiber or cotton towel to soak up the excess moisture from your hair. Avoid rubbing or using hot hairdryers and let your hair dry naturally. Do not comb wet hair as it is more prone to breakage. Besides, do not wash your hair too often, as it will rob it of its moisture and make it dry.

6. Regular Hair Care

Keep your hair at a manageable length and regularly use natural moisturizing hair masks to keep your hair healthy, smooth, and tangle-free. Get rid of split ends in your hair by getting regular trims. Avoid using heating tools and chemicals or alcohol-containing hair products. Furthermore, switch to henna instead of chemical dyes.

When to See A Doctor?

If your hair tangles regularly and you experience excessive hair loss, schedule an appointment with your doctor. Your hair issues could point to some underlying health condition that needs to be dealt with first.
