The Need for Lip Scrubs

Cold winters and harsh sunlight can damage your skin. The delicate skin of your lips is affected by the vagaries of the weather as well. It can become dry, dull, and dark. A lip scrub helps remove dry skin and dead skin cells to make your lips softer, smoother, and brighter. They improve the texture and appearance of your lips. Their gentle exfoliating action helps your lips absorb moisturizers and lip balm better. Besides, they make your lipstick spread evenly and look better on your lips.

Lip scrubs increase blood circulation in your lips and reduce fine lines that results due to aging. Lip scrubs can be semi-liquid or soft solid in consistency and contain particles that can buff away dry, dead skin.

They have two components, exfoliant and emollient. Ground sugar, cinnamon, and coffee are some of the most commonly used exfoliants as they are gentle on the sensitive skin of your lips. Plant-based seed butter or oils are used as emollients. Emollients moisturize your lips and create a
smooth, friction-free surface for the exfoliant to work on.

Benefits of Cranberries in Lip Scrub

Cranberries are rich in antioxidants, vitamins C and E, and nutrients that protect your lips from pollution, damage due to free radicals and reduce the signs of aging like fine lines, pigmentation, and loss of elasticity. The fatty acids in cranberries help hydrate and soften your lips. Vitamin C boosts
collagen production keeps your lips supple and elastic. The acids in cranberries gently exfoliate and brighten your lips.

Thawed frozen cranberries – one cup
1/8 cup pure melted coconut oil
1 cup brown sugar

Before using the lip scrub, wipe away any dirt, gloss, lipstick off of your lips. Now, wet the lips slightly. Take a little bit of the cranberry scrub with your index finger and massage your lips gently in a circular motion for a few seconds. Rinse off, pat dry, and apply a natural lip balm.

Never use lip scrubs more than twice a week. Always use them gently, and don’t scrub your lips too hard or too long. Avoid their use if your lips are bleeding or if you have sunburns or blisters on your lips.

Lip Care Routine for Winter

The best way to avoid chapped lips in winter is to drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated. Avoid picking at the dead, dry skin on your lips, as this might cause tears and cause the cracks to widen and bleed. Avoid licking your lips as it makes the digestive enzymes in your saliva act on your lips and hurt the skin more.

If you stay indoors where the air is dry, invest in a good humidifier to add moisture to the air and keep your skin from drying out. Cover your mouth with a scarf when heading out into the cold, windy weather. Stick to a balanced diet and avoid processed foods that contain excess salt. Excess
salt can dehydrate your body.

Use a gentle exfoliator on your lips to remove dead skin. A mixture of 2 tsp sugar with 1 tsp honey massaged on your lips will help gently exfoliate them. Use a natural lip balm like Vaseline to moisturize your lips and avoid lipsticks that may contain chemicals.

A mixture of honey and clarified butter makes a natural lip moisturizer and softener. Use lip balms that offer sun protection as well. Apply lip balm several times a day, especially at bedtime and when you head out. Remember to wash your hands before applying lip balm to prevent any infection on your lips. Avoid smoking as tobacco smoke also dries out your lips.

These are some of the tips for maintaining a good health of your lips and preventing them from becoming chapped due to harsh weather conditions.
